New contract at HEATON LMD

October 2011

Emeg has been awarded the Network Rail contract to carry out the design, supply and installation of the renewal of the railway depot protection system and heating at Heaton LMD.

The SafeNet DPPS control panel which will be installed at Heaton LMD

The contract will involve the installation of Emeg’s unique SafeNet Depot Personnel Protection System, a flexible user-friendly intelligent network distribution system which protects railway depot operatives. The railway depot protection system consists of a series of road end panels and touch screen technology which enables data to be relayed into a supervisor’s office. The SafeNet Depot Personnel Protection System ensures rail-vehicle movements in and out of railway depots are controlled with no risk to operatives, enabling them to conduct train maintenance in a safe environment.

As part of the SafeNet system at Heaton LMD, Emeg will also provide new overhead status lights with a combined audible warning facility that not only give a distinct audible warning of a movement on a particular road but also can issue a verbal warning of imminent movement specifying the actual road. In addition to this the SafeNet system at Heaton LMD will also comprise new red/white aspect LED train movement lights and whilst incorporating some existing automatic derailers into the system Emeg will also provide new automatic derailers on the existing unprotected roads.

The Heaton LMD contract also comprises the complete design, installation, test and commission of the heating systems within the railway depot accommodation building and the bogie cleaning shed.

Within the staff accommodation building Emeg has installed a new heating system, new gas heating boilers, new pipework, pumps, controls and storage tanks, install new radiators, insulate and mechanically protect pipework and remove the old redundant systems. This work has been undertaken in the fully occupied staff accommodation building and this work has been carried out in a manner that resulted in only very minor inconvenience to the depot staff.

In the bogie cleaning shed, Emeg will replace the existing system with gas fired radiant heaters and install a new control system.

Tim Burrell, Emeg’s Pre-Contract Director said: “Emeg is delighted to have been selected by Network Rail to carry out a thorough overhaul of the railway depot protection system and heating at Heaton LMD. Our team of engineers, electricians, pipe fitters, heating and ventilation engineers have the skills to meet Network Rail’s requirements with this substantial and valued contract.”
